AHG Awards Ceremony

It's hard to believe another year of AHG has gone by!

It was Irene's first year, so she was with the Pathfinders.
Once she had completed all the requirements, which included stuff like memorizing the AHG Oath and Creed, saying the Pledge of Allegiance, and memorizing several Bible verses, she was eligible to move up to the Tenderhearts.
She got her Tenderheart vest and a new bag to keep her AHG handbook in.
Emma completed her first year as a Tenderheart, earning a couple of badges and service stars.
Olivia finished up her second year as a Pioneer and has moved up to be a Patriot, the highest level in AHG. She worked really hard this year, earning a lot of badges and finishing the year with over 100 hours of community service, enough to get the Gold Presidential Award!
We are so proud of our girls and the hard work they put in. It's great that they enjoy it so much!

Outdoors Skills - AHG

One of the badges Olivia has been working on for AHG is Outdoor Skills.
As part of the badge work, she got together with the other girls in her squad and learned to make tarp-and-rope shelters.

She also learned how to start a fire using a flint and steel.
Of course, it isn't all work when the girls get together...

We'll see if she can put those skills to work later this summer when we go camping!

AHG Mom/Daughter Tent Camping

The PiPa Mom/Daughter camping trip this year was to Morrow Mountain State Park.

The girls camped out in their tents. Fortunately, they had some good weather. :)
The ladies got up early in the morning to climb Morrow Mountain and see the sunrise. Notice... no girls. Hmmm....
They did rouse themselves later in the day for a hike.

On the last day, the girls rolled up their sleeves and got to work! The park needed some boardwalks repaiered, so the rangers equipped them with the tools and materials to get the job done.

They did an amazing job! Way to go girls!!!

Olivia's GLAM Night

As an AHG Pioneer, Olivia had to organize and execute a GLAM night with one of her squadmates. They put together a Secret Service-themed night for the rest of the troop to do.
Each girl got an envelope with their missions inside.
The missions were service-oriented and were designed so that they were doing two small service projects there and then planning to do more on their own at home.
Then they went from station to station in the gym putting together the things they needed to accompish their missions.

The night was a complete success!

AHG Spring Camping Trip

It's time again for the AHG Spring Family Camping Trip!
This time we're at Falls Lake State Park near Durham.
With the weather being cold and rainy, it certainly wasn't good for spending any time on the lake.
Fortunately, the weather improved enough that we could take a nature hike with the troop.

Cookies for Firefighters - AHG Service Project 2019

Just like last year, Rebecca helped her Pathfinder girls do a sweet service project: bake cookies for firefighters. This year, Irene was in the group to help. They baked a couple dozen cookies and took them to the nearest fire station.

The guys were so excited to spend time withthe girls and show them the gear and the trucks.
And, of course, they were very happy with the cookies that came with them!

Textile Arts

Olivia and her friend at AHG, Sarah, decided to pick a badge to work on together. They chose the Textile Arts badge which involved learning about different artistic uses of cloth and yarn. They had to pick a few different craft styles and make an example of each. They made:
Tie Dye
Macrame. (Olivia really loved tying all the knots. She wants to try her hand at bigger projects now.)
Latchhook, which involved pulling and tying little yarn bits through a mesh grid in a specific pattern.
She then sewed it into a pillow with ribbon.
She had so much fun with that one that she wants to do more and more now.
They also had to explore the history of textiles and textile arts, so they took a tour of the textile museum here in Greensboro. They got to explore our area's long history of textile manufacturing.
Strangely enough, the thing they found the most fun was typing on the old secretaries' typewriters. If only they were as excited about doing their real schoolwork as they were about pretending to do that!

And finally, Olivia and Sarah worked together to make this amazing banner!
