A Winter Walk

On the first day of Winter, it was a balmy day, hitting almost 60 degrees, so we decided to go for a hike in the woods north of town. 

 We got on the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway and walked a loop that was about 3.5 miles. 

 The littles walked the whole way, minus a little bit at the end for Irene.

 We cam across a big tree that had fallen down and the kids spent a little while climbing all over it.

It was a beautiful day, a great walk and everyone enjoyed it. Not too bad for winter, eh? :)

EMMA Homeschool Co-op

(sorry for the foggy picture... It was warm that day and the camera had been in the air-conditioned car, which fogged the lens.)

This Fall, we enrolled Olivia, Gabe and Ezra in a homeschool co-op called EMMA, which stands for "Enriching, Mentoring, Mastering and Achieving." While the boys were only there for PE (so they could have some time playing organized games with other kids), Olivia took much more. She was in NC history, Botany, Literature Circle (where they would read a book over a few weeks and then take turn breaking down a particular aspect of the book like vocabulary, imagery, narration and so on), and Robotics! 

During the term, they did some special days, one of which was "Dress Like Your Favorite Literary Character." Guess who Olivia picked...

She did really well in her classes and during the last week, they had a fun Arts and Sciences night where they showcased science projects, artwork and music that the kids had all prepared. 

 Olivia's Botany project was a leaf classification display. She had to find 10 different leaves and display them with information like the leaf margin, shape, position on the branch and so on. She did a fantastic job on it, splatter-painting the background and using different brightly colored paper for the mountings. 

 The robotics class had a really cool display set up with Lego robots that had their own controllers and allowed kids to pick up blocks and run into each other.

 Gabe and Ezra tangled up a few times. 

 They also had these little robots that could be controlled with a TV remote. 

Enriching, Mentoring, Mastering, and Achieving

 Emma and Irene certainly enjoyed playing with those. Enriching, Mentoring, Mastering, and 

Olivia demonstrated how to move the robots up a ramp and knock all the balls off their perches. 

The semester ended last week and they have a couple of weeks off. They will be going back in January and we're adding a couple of classes for the boys: Art and a musical called The Agape League, which is about superheroes that embody different fruits of the Spirit (Love, Joy, Peace, etc.) The boys will likely be in the choir, not actually acting, but we'll see! 

Fall Recitals

Gabe had his very first recital this week and he did so well! 

He practiced really hard for it and it paid off. We are so proud of him for doing such a great job.

Olivia, who is old-hat at this now ;), also had hers and did a wonderful job as well. It took her a while to get a hand of this piece because it had a lot of chords to it rather than a straight melody. She lost her place at one point, but did a great job of keeping her wits and soldiering on.

Perler Bead Madness!

May I never say that my children aren't handy and creative... Hardly a day goes by that I don't find a perler bead board on my desk to be ironed and most of the time, the stack gets quite high before I finally take care of them. :)

Here's just a few of the multitude that they've done over the past few months.

 The big arrow is an example of the new 3D patterns they're trying out.

Gabe and Ezra have made a couple of 3D planes that have wings, tails and even missiles.

Tire Swing Fun with the Littles

I looked out the window of the kitchen the other day and caught sight of the Littles having a grand time on the tire swing.

 Emma would push Irene as high as she could.

 Then she'd let go and run over to the tree, lay down and stick her foot out.

 The tire would hit her foot and spin Irene in circles. You should have heard then cackling. :)

 Then Emma would get up and do it all over again.

There are times when the two of them get into knock-down, drag-out fights, but there's as much or more time that they spend just having as good a time as you can imagine. We hope and pray that the two of them stay this close throughout their lives. :)

Goodbye Dinner with Nana and Pop-pop

Well, They finally did it. Nana and Pop-pop have finally retired and are moving to Florida. 

 But before they left, we had one last dinner with them, Uncle Greg and Cousin Rooney. 

 We tried to see how many girls could fit in Nana's lap. And when has Ezra been anything other than crazy?

 Of course, the goofballs certainly sent them off with as much dignity and seriousness as they could muster. While we will miss having Nana and Pop-pop so close, we are excited for their new adventure and wish them a long and restful retirement.

Happy Birthday, Gabe!

Our little man turned 8 last week!  It's amazing to think that on a dark and stormy night 8 years ago, I got to play catch (literally) with my first son. :) For his party this year, he begged for a Thor-themed party to go along with the Captain America party last year. Sadly, Thor wasn't in the latest movie to come out, so there wasn't any Thor-specific party stuff and we went with the whole Avengers team instead. 

So we compensated by making Mjolnir (Thor's hammer) watermelon, 

 Mjolnir cheese and pretzels

And the crowning achievement:

 The Mjolnir Cake (complete with lightning!), which was a big hit.

Speaking of big hits...

 We got a hold of a few Nerf Mjolnirs and I stayed up all night creating a "Whack-a-Loki" game. 

and whack it, they did! 

 Then we put the hammers to a more precise use and played Lawn Hammers.

 They had to toss the three hammers and get them in a hoop on the ground.

 Then we put their swinging arms back into action with a pinata.

 It was quite a mad scramble for the candy. :)

The day really couldn't have gone off better.

  Everyone had a lot of fun, from the littles...
